Olympic Mountains

Sale price$21.95

The Olympic Mountains rise dramatically from the sea, with moss-covered forests extending to the water’s edge. Glaciers top steep peaks, while alpine meadows and lush valleys are home to elk, deer, cougars, bears, and unique species found nowhere else on Earth. Established in 1938 to safeguard the natural splendor of the Olympic Mountains, Olympic National Park expanded in 1953 to include the rugged coastline. In 1988, 95 percent of the park was designated as the Olympic Wilderness to preserve its wild beauty. Now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is one of North America’s most popular wilderness destinations. Its challenging landscape left a lasting impact on those who attempted to tame it—farmers abandoned their efforts, miners found no wealth, and loggers turned to reforestation. Tourism, however, took root early and continues to thrive.
